I noticed they have one of the shortest strokes of any SBC engine, could be good for winding that SOB way way up !? I really like the screamer V8's .... would it be worth rebuilding a motor like this ? the small size is kinda cool .. in some way ---May the Force be with you!

Posts: 3894 (07/04/02 3:22 PM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	nah..i wouldn't bother by starting to build up a 283...they are an economy V8..they also have a small bore meaning you'd never be able to make good heads work with it to get it to wind up like you want...if you want a high winding SBC do a 302 or a 327... Shit Happens

Posts: 3894 (07/04/02 3:29 PM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	well there is no reason you can't build it up...it would be something different. its just probaly the worst canidate for a SBC build up..you can make 350's wind up high without a problem really...just cause of the short stroke doesn't mean its going to wind up like you think it is going to...you'd probaly need to switch to a stronger lighter crank to do what you want to do anyways...and in that case you could always destroke a 350...i don't know...its you choice...but i don't think its exactly what you think it is BTW,,what is it out of/ what year is the block if you know? Shit Happens

Most of the good heads we have for SBC with have valve interfernce with the cylinder walls of a 283 i would assume....but i think someone like Skar would know more about this Shit Happens

Its just a thought... after the turbo is finally put on my truck I will need to build something really fast .. (the truck will be damn fast, if all goes as planned, and will kick a lotta peoples ass's on the street, but it will never be beating SC'd stangs and camaros at the strip...) ---May the Force be with you!

Posts: 3894 (07/04/02 4:45 PM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	well big valves always help..you could only bore it out so far .060 max unless you hard blocked it..then i would be impossible to run on the street...you could turn it into something special...but its not as good as say a 350 to start out with...you're going to be at a disadvantage...and the money you're gonna end up spending, you're better off just starting out with the engine size you want...if you want a short stroke high revver it would probaly be better to find a 4 bolt 350 and destroking it...cause even with the 283's shorter stroke its still isn't nessacerily wind up hi..and i'm sure it won't with the stock crank...so is it worth it to build up a 283 over other SBC's no...i would say absoultely not....unless you're doing a supercheap junkyard build and its all about cost Shit Happens

Posts: 853 (07/04/02 4:48 PM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	If you take that 283 and bore it .060 over.......its gonna become a 302 and it will have a 4.00 bore then, and thats what a 350 has. You wont have any problems with the valves hitting the walls then.

I think w/ a Fuel Injected TT setup, bored 60 over, good cam, heads and good quality internals it would work... and pull to 7-8 k .. but I'm not an expert on 283's (OBVIOUSLY) I sure do appreciate the help though... the more the better .... ---May the Force be with you!

Posts: 3894 (07/04/02 5:41 PM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	It can be done....first thing i would check around though...and this is something i don't know about is find out if: The deck height is the same on a 283 as a 350...this insuures that 350 intakes can be used with it The water passages are the same..to make sure stanard 350 heads can be used See what kind of Aftermarket it has for hard parts.... cause at the least you're going to need to do rods and pistons to handle a turbo... Find out maching cost for things such as: Splayed 4 bolt mains Knife endging and balencing of crank to lighweight rods and pistons My only real problems with this whole idea is that i know you can do the same thing(meaning high rpm screamer) with a properly balenced and setup 350...and with the cost involved with this type of build up...ie EFI, Turbos...why go cheap on the most important part of the build up the short block...but if its something you want to try then by all means go ahead and do it...i'm sure the end product will work very well plus if you install it in a drag car you may beable to be competive in classes that handicap for cubic inches.
